Chapter

22

Sam

I pulled a bottle from the freezer. I’m not sure what I was drinking, but I needed it to burn.

“Lennon had been extremely preoccupied that week. He was either off with Gena or passed out. You remember they brought me along to keep an eye on you.”

“I remember those parts. I don’t need the long version. I need the parts I don’t know.”

“Yeah,” I take a drink, letting the fire burn deep in my belly. “That last day, we walked back to the beach house; Marcos was there. Lennon was making a deal with him.”

“Sam.”

I was stalling. It didn’t all happen at once. My fall happened a little at a time.

“I went to Lennon. I told him we had started seeing each other. He flipped out. Accused me of using you for sex. I denied it and told him I fell in love with you.” I finish the glass and pour another. “He did not take it well. We fought. He threatened me. Then tore me down. Lennon knew everything about me. He knew enough to have an opinion of me. And in his opinion, I wasn’t good enough for you.”

Tiffany leans over the counter, bracing herself, tucking her face into the corner of her arm.

“Lennon wasn’t wrong. I was fighting a lot. It took me years to cage that anger inside me. I drank too much. I partied hard in college. I’ve fucked a lot of women. The business was also struggling. We didn’t know from one day to the next if we were going to close the doors. I was spinning out of control.”

Tiffany reaches for a towel sitting on the counter and uses it to wipe her face.

“You were barely an adult. You didn’t have any life experiences. You deserved someone who could care for you, and Lennon reminded me I could barely take care of myself. I did not want to take you down with me.”

“That’s total bullshit, and you fucking know it.” She wipes her face again, blowing her nose into the towel. “You were fucking scared.”

“I was,” I admit. “But I was scared because I’d planned out my whole life in one week, and you were in every part. I wasn’t scared of Lennon. I was scared you’d wake up one day and realize you missed out on the best years of your life. I knew you’d wake up one day and blame me.”

“Oh, because these last years were a fucking delight. You guys decided for me. You took that life I wanted away without giving me a choice.”

“You were eighteen. I was twenty-seven.”

“Not that it matters, but I was twenty, Sam. You assumed my age because that’s what you wanted it to be. You needed a reason to stay away from me. You said ones and twos should never be together.” She laughs, wiping her eyes, “It was my birthday that day. It was my twenty-first birthday. That was the whole reason I’d thought Lennon came down to visit me since it was such a big birthday.
